Tips for Making your Own Web Page

If you'd like to make a web page for your AAU team, but aren't quite sure how to go about it, this page will give you the tips you need to get your page up and running and listed on the Palmetto Diamond Links page!

  1. Go to Yahoo! - Recreation:Sports:Baseball:Youth Leagues and or John Skilton's Baseball Links and visit a bunch of youth league web pages to get an idea of content, graphics, etc. Then decide what you want to put in your web page. Rosters of team officials, coaches, and teams are OK. Never include the address and/or telephone number of any adult league member without that member's written permission. And NEVER include the address or telephone number of a player under any circumstances!!
  2. Now comes the hard part. You gotta learn a little HTML. HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It's the language of web pages. It's not really that hard but it will require a little work.

    You can learn HTML through:

    • Books (HTML for Dummies and More HTML for Dummies are good books available through your local book store)
    • Local computer clubs usually have a Web SIG (Special Interest Group) or an HTML SIG where you can get some help.
    • Off the Internet. You probably already figured that, didn't you?
      • HTML Goodies is a new site I've found that will hold your hand through the entire process of building a web page. It has excellent tutorials that take you from greenhorn novice to experienced webmaster!
      • A Beginners Guide to HTML is an excellent first primer for HTML and is highly recommended.
      • Introduction to HTML is another great place for beginners.
      • A good HTML reference site is HTML Quick Reference.
      • Once you get a handle on the basics, here are a couple of more advanced sites that can really help if you're looking to jazz up your page.
      • Java Boutique - More than 100 Java Applets !

There are tons of other HTML and Web page sites out there on the Internet, just go to Yahoo and search for web page or HTML and you'll get more links than you can click a mouse at!

  3. Get an HTML editor. HomeSite is my favorite HTML editor.
  4. Design your Web page. Put in all your content, graphics, pictures, links and everything.
  5. Test all your links. Make sure it works before you . . .
  6. Contact your Internet Provider to set up a publishers account. They will get you a URL (internet address) to upload your web page to. Netfirms is a company that hosts web sites for free as long as you agree to a small banner at the top of each page. The SC AAU Baseball web page is hosted by Netfirms. You will notice there aren't any small banners on the SC AAU Baseball web page. That's because we pay a small monthly fee to be banner-free.
  7. Get registered with the various search engines Yahoo, etc. and certainly John Skilton's Baseball Links.
  8. E-mail Palmetto Diamond Links with your URL to get your web page put on the Palemtto Diamond Links page.

I hope this helps those who are interested in putting on their own web page but aren't sure of exactly how to go about it. Please feel free to use my outline in any make, shape or form that might help. E-mail me, Jim Lisk, with any questions or suggestions.
